Bortle Class 1: Where the Milky Way Casts Shadows

At 12,000 feet in eastern Kumaon, atmospheric light pollution from the northern plains drops away completely. The core of the Milky Way arches directly over the snow summits of Panchachuli.

Camera Settings & Field Craft

  • Optics: 14mm to 24mm ultra-wide f/1.8 or f/2.8 prime lenses.
  • Exposure: 20–25 seconds at ISO 3200 to 6400 to prevent star trailing.
